A principios de la decada de 1870 se realizó en Argentina – Buenos Aires el primer Congreso interamericano de Secretarias, donde se acordó, entre otras, cosas fijar el día 26 de abril como Día e la Secretaria en los 26 países que asistieron a dicha asamblea, en memoria del primer encuentro de países americanos y se crea la Federación Interamericana de Asociaciones de Secretarias "FIAS".
La primera secretaria que registra la historia es Liliam Sholes, hija de Reminton quien inventó de la maquina de escribir a finales de la década de los 1860.
Liliam se dedicó a promocionar el invento de su padre, convirtiendose posteriormente en la ser primera en ejercer este oficio.
